Is Peloton Better Than NordicTrack: A Comparison
If you are in the market for a stationary exercise bike, you will find countless options to cater to your specific needs.
A lot of these bikes are well-equipped and will effectively take your workouts to a whole different level.
Best of all, some high-end ones even come with the help and guidance of a virtual trainer to ensure you’re doing things the right way.
If you’re specifically looking for those kinds of models, brands like NordicTrack and Peloton is what you need.
These brands are among the best in the fitness industry, and their exercise bikes work phenomenally well.
The question is, is Peloton better than NordicTrack, or is it the other way round?
While Peloton is a fairly new brand, it has been gaining mainstream popularity pretty quickly. On the other hand, the NordicTrack brand has been around since the mid-1970s.
Let’s discuss below which one of these brands could be a better fit for you.
Why You Need an Exercise Bike
Before we even get to discussing both brands, Peloton and NordicTrack, we first need to consider why exactly do you need an exercise bike.
The top reasons you may need an exercise bike could include:
- The need for the motivation of joining a spin class without having to leave your home.
- The need to train for a race or the need for a top-of-the-line bike for cross-training.
- If you are a tech lover.
- If you are looking for a ton of classes that you can choose from on-demand with even cross-training workouts available on them.
If you agree with most or all the points above, the Peloton or the NordicTrack exercise bike is exactly what you are looking for.
If you do not relate with most or all of the points, we do not recommend buying these high-end exercise bikes. Instead, you can settle for something far simpler and even cheaper.
The NordicTrack brand has a wide range of exercise bikes that you can choose from; they even range in their prices.
One of their top models, though, which is at par with the Peloton exercise bike is the S22i. It is a bike that comes with a touchscreen and a year-long subscription to iFit Coach.
On the other hand, the Peloton brand only has one exercise bike to offer.
Today, we decided to make a direct comparison between the Peloton exercise bike and the NordicTrack S22i exercise bike.
Is Peloton Better Than NordicTrack: The Peloton vs. the NordicTrack S22i
If you really want an exercise bike from one of these two brands, these are the bikes that you need to compare.
Let’s do a basic comparison of these two bikes using some of their most important features.
- NordicTrack S22i: Yes
- Peloton: No
- NordicTrack S22i: -10% to 20%
- Peloton: None
- NordicTrack S22i: 24 (digital)
- Peloton: 100 (manual)
- NordicTrack S22i: 350 lbs.
- Peloton: 305 lbs.
- NordicTrack S22i: 22” HD Touchscreen
- Peloton: 21.5” HD Touchscreen
- NordicTrack S22i: iFit Coach (free one year)
- Peloton: Peloton Membership ($39 per month)
Just a quick look at the specifications above, it’s clear that the NordicTrack bike has a clear edge over the Peloton bike.
That said, the Peloton bike’s major selling point is its live classes, which they offer daily.
All these classes are filmed in their workout studio, and they constantly add to their on-demand classes, with things like yoga, tread classes, and more.
The membership, though, does not come for free. You have to pay an additional $39 every month over the cost of the bike.
The NordicTrack bike does not come with live classes with trainers that you can interact with, but they do have a massive library of on-demand workouts that you can access through their iFit Coach app.
What’s better is that the year-long subscription to the app and the exercise bike comes at an all-inclusive price.
When you look at the Peloton and NordicTrack bikes’ footprints, they are not too far apart.
Both of them are great for small spaces, and you can easily fit them in any corner of your home.
We were impressed with the built of the frame on both the bikes since they are made using high-quality steel to ensure the exercise bikes are durable.
That said, you must take good care of whichever bike you choose since that will determine how long it will last.
Be prepared for general wear and tear, which is a part of any piece of exercise equipment.
If you take a look at the Peloton and NordicTrack websites, they will make you believe that the bikes’ resistance systems are completely different, but we found them to be fairly similar.
These exercise bikes have a strong set of magnets that move towards and away from the metal flywheel, making it easier or harder to push the pedal.
The main difference we found in the resistance of both these exercise bikes is how its adjustment takes place.
If you take a look at the NordicTrack exercise bike, there is a 24-step digital controller that will make the necessary adjustment in the resistance as you control it with the buttons placed on the handlebars or through the touchscreen display.
The bike also features an incline and decline adjustment, which you can control digitally. It will allow the bike to simulate a 10% decline and 20% incline.
A smart feature that NordicTrack has integrated into its exercise bike is the cycling routes via Google Maps so that you can cycle through your favorite routes anywhere on the globe.
Also, thanks to its elevation data, the bike will automatically alter its resistance and elevation to simulate the route you chose. We found this feature absolutely amazing!
On the other hand, the Peloton exercise bike makes use of a physical knob present on the bike’s frame and connected to the magnets through the mechanical linkage.
When you rotate the knobs, the magnets will move towards or away from the flywheel to create the resistance.
A significant upside of this manual change of resistance is that it allows for finer control over resistance levels.
Nonetheless, the rider has to take their eyes off of the screen and their hands off of the handlebars to change the resistance.
The NordicTrack bike’s console comes with a 22-inch rotating touchscreen design so that the user can get off the bike to get some strength training done during their workout.
The rotating console makes it possible to stay in tune with the chosen workout from the start to the end.
The Peloton bike’s console, on the contrary, does not come with a rotating design or is fixed in place.
That said, it does come with a 21.5-inch touchscreen, so you can comfortably workout behind the bike and still see the screen.
Now that you know the main differences between the NordicTrack and Peloton exercise bikes, we decided to answer some FAQs that may clarify some of the doubts in your mind.
1. Do You Need Special Shoes for NordicTrack Bike?
The pedals on the NordicTrack S22i are toe cages. They allow the user to use them without the need to purchase any special clip-in shoes.
You can simply ride the bike with a pair of regular spin shoes.
If you are more comfortable with clip-in pedals, you can swap the pedals and use special clip-in shoes for the bike.
The Peloton exercise bike, on the other hand, has clip-in pedals and will need special clip-in shoes to use the bike.
2. Is a Peloton Really Worth It?
Peloton bikes are well-built, have a great design, and are fun to work out on, so it’s no surprise that the bike is costly up front and has an additional monthly expense of the subscription.
If you choose not to renew the subscription, the bike pretty much loses what makes it so special in the first place.
While the bike has a good resale value at present, there is no guarantee that a company whose only exercise bike is expensive to sell and support is capable of sustaining in the long term since the trends in fitness change constantly.
The bike is only worth it if you know you’re going to use it regularly and even share it with everyone else in your home. That’s the only way to justify such a steep price tag.
3. Can You Use the NordicTrack or Peloton Exercise Bikes Without Their Subscription?
While you can still make use of the NordicTrack and Peloton exercise bikes without their subscription, it is not recommended to do so.
You can only get the most out of these bikes and your workout by committing to the respective interactive training subscriptions.
So, is Peloton better than NordicTrack? No. While Peloton isn’t a bad exercise bike, its features are not par with the ones the NordicTrack S22i offers.
Additionally, the bike itself is expensive and does not come with a free training subscription, which further increases its cost.
That makes the NordicTrack exercise bike a better option over the Peloton bike.
